Seasonal Depression and Mindfulness
As we begin 2023, we should be aware of seasonal depression. Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, has plagued many of us over the last few months. This disorder is more than just our winter blues or holiday frustrations. This is a very real form of depression that occurs during the fall and winter seasons.
However, the question remains of how we distinguish holiday frustration from seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Well, by examining the symptoms of SAD, we can figure out if we fall into this category.
SAD can manifest as low energy, hopelessness, irritability, anxiety, social withdrawal, sleep and appetite changes, and loss of interest in activities that you once enjoyed. These various signs can help you recognize your disorder and will be the first step toward development.
However, don’t let these symptoms bring you down! There are various tasks that can help you overcome these obstacles. Such as, creating a schedule that will allow you the opportunity to go to bed at a regular time, and get enough rest; likewise, concentrating on healthy eating and structured meals. Other tasks include going outside, exercising, socializing, and taking trips. These healthy habits can replace your negative energy with a positive lifestyle.
Finally, keep in mind that we all undergo tough moments when life gives us more stress. It is okay and normal to have a bad day. However, SAD is a form of depression, and if you believe you may be experiencing this disorder, it may be time to seek professional help. There are countless professionals who are ready and willing to guide you back to your joyful self.
